lyrics

The date had not been going well
despite how much I thought I’d fell
in like with your profile upon first glance
but in real time we hadn’t found much of a chance
to open up our souls exploring who we were
so as I walked you home I knew that when I’d ask you, you would just demure
but when your key slipped in the lock, I didn’t like the sound
of the splitting metal pieces hitting ground.
That’s when we found
you locked out
of your house.

It didn’t take long to call services
that claimed availability
but wouldn’t show for many hours, best.
I was tired, and I really wanted rest
but it seemed I would seem somewhat unseemly
leaving you in the lurch I’d be considered at best ungentlemanly
so I grinned and asked you what you thought we ought to do.
And you looked back, the foot now on the other shoe.
That’s when we found
ourselves together
outside your house.

Before us waits a door that we will not see opening for a while
so we’ll while away the hours waiting for the locksmith with a smile
as people pass us by upon the street where we just sit and talk
and walk on back and forth and back just learning things around the block.
This is the way we should have planned our time off from the very start:
To learn all of our likes and dislikes, unlock both our hearts.
If I’d have known this kind of time and space would be available
I’d probably have canceled our reservation ta-able.

The night will end eventually
perhaps not quite as heavenly
as the part we’re in right now, that is to say,
I hope the locksmith never gets here, anyway!
But I suppose at this hour I could agree
to see your bathroom and your bedroom and perhaps a cup of tea
since we’ve been talking nuff to make my tonsils ache
and I’ll bet my throat could use a couple minutes’ break
and I can’t wait
to see the inside
of your house.
