I used to drive through the weather, humming along, just saying what I would do,
as soon as I got off the long dark road & got back home to you.
I’d think about the table and the supper just waiting, and the soup, and the tea, and all.
But there ain’t no soup. There ain’t no tea.
And there ain’t no You to recall.

In the days of car I have done real harm
I have drank the bones and polluted the farm.
I have wrenched the trains and struck horse’s power.
I have done such harm in the age of car.

We race on such roads to Nowhere, hoping that without delay
if we keep driving at such heightened speeds, we’ll arrive someday
to some final destination that will satisfy
but we cannot comprehend the process if we never even bother to ask why.

In the days of car I destroyed the sphere
I have scarred the earth with all my tracks in fear.
Had I simply crawled, would I have gone so far?
Almost certainly not, but I’d have killed the car.

These days, I travel much less; I can’t afford to go anywhere.
In any case, what is the point, when, once I arrive, there is only desolation there?
This plane has been devastated by a people who knew better but didn’t.
And those people are me and you, and all others who took no hint.

In the days of Car, we just drive around,
off to
distraction or the lost & found.
Now our lives are shattered and the land is scarred
thanks to decades of the age of Car.
Goodbye the Age of Car.
Farewell, the Age of Car.
Bye bye, the Age of Car!
